LedgerChat vs An app you open later
Expenses, recorded where you spend them.
The reason expense tracking fails is not the app. It is the gap between spending the money and opening anything.
First, what An app you open later is better at
An expense app with receipt scanning and a card feed will capture things this cannot — it reads the receipt, it sees the card, it fills in the blanks. If that is working for you, keep it. This removes a different obstacle: the one where nothing gets recorded at all because recording it means opening something.

Do not switch if
- You want to photograph receipts and have them read. Photos are not processed — you would type or say the amount.
- You want expenses pulled in from a card or bank automatically. There is no feed.
- You need mileage, per-diems or reimbursement approvals. None of that exists.
- You are tracking a team’s spending. This is built for one person’s books, not an expenses department.
It is worth a try if
- You spend money away from a desk and record it later, or never.
- You want to know what a category has cost you this month without opening anything.
- You want the year already categorised when your accountant asks.
- You would rather say "petrol 2000" than fill in four fields.
Questions
- Can I photograph a receipt?
- No. Photos are not read, and a tracker that quietly ignored them would be worse than one that says so. Say or type the amount instead — it takes about as long.
- How does it know the category?
- From your own categories, matched against what you said. A bare amount and a category you already have is posted straight away; anything less obvious is asked about.
- Does it warn me before I overspend?
- Set a budget on a category and the saved message shows what you have spent against it, with a warning once you are past.
- Can I keep business and personal apart?
- Two books in one chat, with a line on every reply telling you which one you are in.
- What do I get at the end of the month?
- A statement as a link: what came in, what went out, and the categories it went to.
Three days, no card.
Seven voice notes and seven documents. If it has not earned a place by then, it never will.
